Books

The library's books on education can be found by searching the catalog.  For more information on how to search the library's catalog, view our tutorial.

 

EBooks

One can find Ebooks either by searching NetLibrary or by using the library's catalog.  To retrieve only ebooks from a catalog search, use the advanced search option and choose "Ebooks only" under limits. To view books in the Net Library from home, you will first need to set up an account from a computer on campus. Online Articles

Articles can be searched online using the databases in the Alabama Virtual Library.  Some available databases associated with education journals are listed below.  (Descriptions are from the AVL databases description page.)  For more information about using the Alabama Virtual Library view our tutorial.

 

ERIC - ERIC, the U.S. Department of Education Educational Resource Information Center database, contains citations and abstracts from over 980 educational and education-related journals, as well as full text of more than 2,200 digests.

Academic Search Premier - Full text and images from over 4,700 journals covering biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, religion & theology, etc.

 

InfoTrac OneFile - A 'mega-content' database indexing over 6,000 periodicals, newspapers, and newswires with backfile coverage from 1980 to present, updated daily. The database includes full text articles for 3,000 periodicals, 89 wire services and business press releases. OneFile offers single source searching for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.

Professional Collection Thomson Gale Professional Collection Online is a custom selection of more than 300 full-text journals for educators and is updated daily. It covers Arts and Humanities, Child and Adolescent Psychology and Development, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Health/Nutrition/Fitness, Learning Disabilities, Literature, School Law, Science and Technology, Social Sciences, and Sport/Athletic Training

Professional Development Collection - Professional educators can search over 530 professional education journals and periodicals and locate the full text of articles from 440 titles and images from 150 titles. The collection offers information on everything from children's health and development to cutting-edge pedagogical theory and practice.

 

The American Educational Research Association Special Interest Group has also created a list of free, open-access, peer-reviewed journals which you can search for articles on education.

 

Journals

The Shelton State Community College Libraries hold print copies of many education journals.  To find out whether the library holds print copies of specific journals, use the advance search option in the Library Catalog to the limit your search to "Periodicals Only."  To find out which journals are available electronically through the AVL, search SerialsSolutions.  You may also want to browse the American Educational Research Association Special Interest Group's list of open-access, peer-reviewed education journals.

The following sites are recommended for basic information on educational topics for student research.  In addition, useful sites for faculty members are also included.  This listing represents selected sites only and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of educational sites.

Online edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, which is the academic world's premier source of news and information; covers issues, professional events and meetings, academic job openings, etc.; college employees should contact D. Grimes at ext. 2233 for special instructions on searching the Academe Today database.

Home page for the Department of Postsecondary Education; includes information about personnel, contacts, policies, job openings, etc.

Alabama State Department of Education http://www.alsde.edu

Official publication of the SDE; provides access to information about the State Board of Education and the SDE, its mission and services, staff, events and programs.

American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) http://www.aacc.nche.edu/

Provides access to the addresses, phone numbers, and Web sites of some 2,000 community colleges in the United States, the AACC site also includes a wealth of information all aspects of two year colleges, including historical background, recent news items, relevant legislative issues, statistics, events calendar, job openings, grants, and even a list of members of Congress with community college backgrounds. Compares with Community College Web http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/cc/info.html, a site developed by Maricopa College, which includes some non-U.S. (mostly Canadian) colleges.

National association for colleges and universities; provides links to online resources, facts, information, issues, educational news and trends, etc.

Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC); federally-funded national information system that provides, through its 16 subject-specific clearinghouses, associated adjunct clearinghouses, and support components, a variety of services and products on a broad range of education-related issues.

Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU)  http://www.aacu.org/

Official site of AACU, a professional organization dedicated to advancing the aims of a liberal education; includes links to professional meetings, online resources, etc.

Center for All Collegiate Information http://www.collegiate.net/text.html

Hundreds of links to all sorts of collegiate home pages. You can look at lists of universities, graduate programs, majors, admissions, international study, university departments, staff, collegiate sports, sciences, and more.

College News Online http://www.collegenews.com/

Campus newswire and centralized information service for anyone interested in higher education. There are links to about 400 student-run and campus newspapers, as well as information and links for financial aid, internships, employment, computer assistance, and a textbook exchange. A geographic Campus Index links users to colleges and universities throughout the US and to higher education institutions in over 110 different countries worldwide.

Access to descriptions of thousands of tests. The "database collects a variety of instruments:  achievement tests, aptitude tests, personality measures, attitude measures, career/vocational interest measures, occupational tests such as nursing or sales skills inventories." There are also pointers to scholarly test reviews, and a directory of test publishers' contact information. From this page, you can individually search the ETS Test File (Educational Testing Service), the Test Review Locator (Buros and Pro-Ed), and the Buros/ERIC Test Publisher Publisher Directory.
