Books

The library's books on geography can be found by searching the catalog.  For more information on how to search the library's catalog, view our tutorial.

 

EBooks

One can find Ebooks either by searching NetLibrary or by using the library's catalog.  To retrieve only ebooks from a catalog search, use the advanced search option and choose "Ebooks only" under limits. To view books in the Net Library from home, you will first need to set up an account from a computer on campus. Online Articles

Articles can be searched online using the databases in the Alabama Virtual Library.  Some available databases associated with articles on sociology are listed below.  (Descriptions are from the AVL databases description page.)  For more information about using the Alabama Virtual Library view our tutorial.

 

Academic OneFile - Academic OneFile is the premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995. Updated daily.

Expanded Academic ASAP - Supports general reference needs of advanced high school and college undergraduate students. Indexes 2,600 journals with full text articles from 1,400 titles in academic disciplines including the arts, humanities, social sciences, and science and technology. The database indexes national news periodicals, general interest magazines, newswires, and the New York Times.

Infotrac OneFile - A 'mega-content' database indexing over 6,000 periodicals, newspapers, and newswires with backfile coverage from 1980 to present, updated daily. The database includes full text articles for 3,000 periodicals, 89 wire services and business press releases. OneFile offers single source searching for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.

World Data Analyst - This powerful yet easy-to-use online tool lets students analyze countries at a glance. World Data Analyst offers detailed statistical comparisons of countries around the world, using both the most recent statistics and historical figures. Plus, students can create tables, charts, and even export the information to a spreadsheet for printing and data crunching. Students can also link to country articles from the Britannica Concise Encyclopedia. It all leads to better understanding of our ever-changing world.

 

The Directory of Open-Access Journals  has also created a list of free, open-access, peer-reviewed geography journals which you can search for articles.

 

Journals

The Shelton State Library holds print copies of National Geographic.  To find out whether the library holds print copies of other specific journals, use the advance search option to search the Library Catalog using the limit "Periodicals Only."  To find out which journals are available electronically through the AVL, search SerialsSolutions.  You may also want to browse the Directory of Open-Access Journals' list of open-access, peer-reviewed geography journals.

        Full-text and updated periodically , The U. S. State Department Background Notes on geographic

        entities and international organizations is now online.  Organized by region and country or international organization, history, government and                 political conditions are discussed, as well as the economy, foreign relations and basic travel information.

        Printable outline maps of the world, continents, regions, countries, the states of the

            U. S., provinces of Canada.  Maps are free "for educational or personal use at home or in the classroom."

Geosource  (http://www.library.uu.nl/geosource/)

        An annotated directory (over 3,000 entries) which covers human geography, physical

        geography, planning, geosciences, and environmental science.  Maintained at the 

            Utrecht University (TheNetherlands) Library.  It complements Odden’s Bookmarkmarks  , which covers

        cartography and maps.

Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names  (http:www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabulary/tgn/index html)

        A good site for finding continuously updated geographic data that is global in

        scope.  Site has nearly 1 million place names representing  around 900,000 physical or

        political entities, including continents, rivers, mountains, empires, nations, states, districts,

        townships, cities, and neighborhoods.  It provides vernacular, English, and historical names;

        variant names in other languages; coordinates; as well as brief notes with additional information

        about the places.

Oddens' Bookmark: The Fascinating World of Maps and Mapping     (http://oddens.geog.uu.nl/index.html)

        Around 9,000 un-annotated links to mapping information on the Web organized in

        categories.  Searchable by keyword/or location.

State & County (U. S.) Quickfacts  (http://quickfacts.census.gov/gfd/)

        Very easy to use census information for national, state, and county levels.

            Tables include People, Facts, Business Facts, and Geographical Facts (land area and density). The People Facts do

        include recent population estimates, racial , age, and gender breakouts; high school and college

        graduates; households; children under the poverty level; etc.  Business Facts include retail sales,

        minority-and women-owned business, building permits, etc.

U. S. Gazetteer  (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer)

        Searchable database by name or state abbreviation, or 5-digit zip code

            Covers
geographic information, maps, and census data.

Your Nation   (http://www.your-nation.com)

          This database provides an interface to data from the CIA Fact book and other sources.  You can

          compare any data element of two countries, find the top five countries for any data element, or

          look at all data elements for a particular country.
